Really interesting Chris, and thanks for sharing your thoughts/insights.
My problem with the interview process is that often the interview process itself is harder than the actual job. Some companies set this insanely high bar when interviewing that they don't set in their day-to-day design process or quality of work they produce.
Lastly, it is really hard to showcase the kind of designer you are in an interview, and there is a multitude of reasons for this (nerves, confidence, environment, who's interviewing you, and so on). I'd personally prefer to allow the designer to work with the team for a week to see what they are like. But I know that is bit unrealistic.
